Removing Deadwood
August 14, 2002

After jacking her up and removing the ballast keel and any and everything that could be freed, Dave ultimately cut through the last three bronze deadwood bolts. I arrived on the scene late (as usual) only to find yet another section of boat removed.

If anyone's worried by those pictures that he just pulled the deadwood out without supporting Sarah properly, there's no cause for concern. Dave says jackstands are like clamps - "you can never have too many."

Even the ballast keel is put to use in the support system.

Not only did the bolts have to be cut, but they had to be cut all the way through. I didn't have the camera with me at the time, but he had the deadwood wedged down a good 2" and two out of three bolts cut through. Finally when he was about a millimeter away from cutting through the last one, the 47-year old bolt let go.

It's not the best picture, but that last little bit there at the top right was all that was holding the deadwood at the end.

After the deadwood dropped, he used the come-along to move it out of the way.

Again, there's no cause for concern. The come-along isn't attached to the fence pole, there's a large palm tree behind it taking the weight.
